A phase diagram (or equilibrium diagram) is a diagram with T and composition as axes, showing the equilibrium constitution. The phase diagram of an alloy made of components A and B, for all combinations of T and X B, defines the A-B system. Binary systems have two components, ternary systems three, and so on. Commercial alloys may. Phase diagrams are the indispensable tools in the field of metallurgy. They provide a medium for understanding the different possible phases of pure metals and alloys under the influence of external agents such as temperature and pressure. Chapter 7 explains the different types of phase diagrams in binary alloy systems.

The availability of a complete and accurate phase diagram is an essential requirement if a full understanding of the properties, and hence the potential applications, of an alloy system is to be gained. Although the general nature of the tungsten-platinum constitutional diagram has been known for many years, it is now apparent that intermediate phases which are not incorporated in the. These substances constitute the components comprising the system and should not be confused with the various phases found within the system. A system, how- ever, also can consist of a single component, such as an element or compound.

Phase Diagrams. A compilation of constitution diagrams of uranium and thorium alloys is presented. The transformation and melting temperatures of the base metal are discussed, followed by the various alloys in alphabetical order.

Phase Diagrams: Materials Science and Technology, Volume II covers the use of phase diagrams in metals, refractories, ceramics, and cements. Divided into 10 chapters, this volume first describes the main features of phase diagrams representing systems in which the oxygen pressure is an important parameter, starting with binary systems and proceeding toward the more complicated Book Edition: 1.

The effects of oxygen and nitrogen, which are present in these alloys as contaminants, on alloy constitution ars shownin the more» form of ternary diagrams and in terms of their quantitative effects on the phases present.

L.M., in Encyclopedia of Materials: Science and Technology, 4 Dendrite Formation in Pure Metals. There can be no constitutional undercooling in a pure melt, since there is no solute rejection. Dendrites can form only in a thermally undercooled melt, which can occur when the melt is poured into a cold mold, in which case growth occurs into a negative gradient, as for equiaxed alloy.

2.Constitutional Undercooling It is actually rare to have a negative temperature gradient ahead of the interface, yet it is observed that dendrites are very hard to avoid in practice.

This occurs because most materials in use have significant levels of impurities.
